Finance schemes for maintained schools

We offer a variety of schemes to South Gloucestershire maintained primary and special schools. These run on a pooled basis with subscribers being charged at a per FTE rate. At the end of the year any funds remaining are reimbursed, or in the event of a shortfall, a charge is made.

Our sickness scheme provides financial reimbursement for teaching and / or support staff absent through sickness to cover the cost of employing their replacement.

The scheme is available to South Gloucestershire maintained primary and special schools only.

  • Schools can cover teaching staff only, support staff only or both
  • No additional charges are applied for new starters throughout the year
  • Includes short term and long term sickness and phased return to work
  • Short term sickness is covered at a predetermined rate from working day 6 to working day 30
  • Long term sickness is covered from day 31 at actual staff costs
  • Excludes extended services staff and lunchbreak supervisors
  • Does not reimburse for bereavement or compassionate leave
  • Periods of sickness absence which commenced prior to joining the scheme are not covered.

This scheme covers maternity, paternity and adoption leave (including shared parental), absence due to jury service, suspension, attendance as a magistrate, councillor or member of a Schools’ Admissions Appeal Panel and long service awards.

The scheme is available to South Gloucestershire maintained primary and special schools only.

  • Schools can cover teaching staff, support staff or both
  • Teachers’ maternity and adoption is reimbursed at a predetermined set rate, pro rata if part time, on return to work. All non-teachers’ maternity pay is reimbursed at actual cost on a monthly basis
  • Teachers’ paternity leave is reimbursed in line with ordinary statutory paternity pay. Non-teachers are reimbursed at actual cost
  • Lighter option available for teaching staff with a cap set on reimbursement
  • Jury service and attendance as a magistrate, councillor or member of a schools’ admissions appeal panel reimburses the actual cost of covering the absence
  • Suspension is reimbursed for actual cost of cover – schools must follow HR policy and advice
  • Long service awards reimbursed in accordance with South Gloucestershire policy.

Our redundancy scheme provides financial reimbursement for redundancy and pension payments made to school employees in situations where there is an agreed, demonstrated, financial reason to reduce staffing levels. The school must comply with the specified scrutiny arrangements and follow the necessary HR procedures.

This scheme is only available to South Gloucestershire maintained primary and special schools.

  • Reimbursement where a financial reason to reduce staffing levels is demonstrated, compliant with prevailing schools HR policies and agreed in advance of any claim being made by the school
  • A cap of £25,000 per person and £100,000 per school, per financial year applies. This includes pension costs for non-teaching staff only (teaching staff pension costs are not covered by the scheme)
  • Flexible / early retirement, lunch break, extended services and staff employed for commercial activities e.g teaching schools, cluster work, and non-school based staff are excluded from the scheme.
