Risk management and insurance service for maintained schools

We recognise that effective management of insurable risks is key to achieving lower overall insurance costs in the medium to long term.

Our experienced team have considerable knowledge and expertise of all aspects of insurance and claims handling. Working in collaboration with you, we offer guidance on operational risks within your school setting to help you manage your risk exposure and keep premiums and claim costs to a minimum.

This service is provided by South Gloucestershire Council on a subscription basis. It is only offered to maintained schools and is subject to annual renewal terms from our insurers.

Full details of our current insurance portfolio for schools is available on application. As a summary, the major risks for consideration are:

  • material damage (buildings and contents) – fire and perils
  • additional expenses including loss of rent
  • money
  • engineering – insurance and inspection to comply with statutory requirements
  • employers’ liability – public liability and officials’ indemnity
  • libel and slander
  • fidelity guarantee
  • personal accident.

Our service includes:

  • the identification and analysis of risk and the procurement of insurances following appropriate procurement requirements
  • maintenance of appropriate levels of insurance for your school, ensuring payment of premiums are met within given time scales. We will also provide declarations to insurers
  • claims management – For schools facing an insurance claim we will investigate and present the school’s claim to relevant insurers and negotiate with the insurers and associated intermediaries. We will respond to claimants where appropriate and where possible, recover uninsured losses
  • support services – Support may be in the form of the provision of general or specific advice on risk management and insurance matters. Records will be compiled and maintained to promote risk management and negotiate best terms at insurance renewals.

  • Hirers’ public liability insurance
  • Motor insurance for minibuses and other vehicles
  • Insurance for all weather pitches.
